Empowering Quotes #94

I like meThere doesn’t seem to be any acknowledged author of this Empowering Quote, but it’s used frequently by coaches and therapists.

What you think of me is none of my business.

It’s good to remember this when faced with judgement or criticism from others. No matter what anyone else says it is never more than their opinion.

So often we allow other people to determine our own sense of self-worth. That’s understandable when we’re childen as we’re taught that adults know better than we do. However, there comes a point when we’re no longer children and then it’s our choice what we take into account and what we don’t.

We need to be very discerning about other peoples’ opinions. Sometimes they can lead us to self-discovery, but much too often they make us feel bad about our self and contribute to low self-esteem. Instead of reacting, it’s best to follow this simple routine before allowing someone’s comment to hurt you or make you angry.

  1. Observe [Is this true?]
  2. Choose [Do you wish to respond in any way? If so, how?]
  3. Act [Or not. It’s your choice.]

Sometimes, we are faced with a comment that niggles of the truth. It’s happened to me a few times. When I comtemplate it, I have discovered that there is at least an element of truth in it. Then I’m able to thank the person for assisting me to know myself better. It can be humbling to admit, but I prefer truth and authenticity to living a lie.

However, remember: Just because a person says something or believes something that you don’t agree with, never makes it true.
